Birth of a Sadboi
The great thing about music, and art at large, is that there are always new talents on the horizon, new visions to be shared with the world. Every work is a snapshot of its artist at that moment in time; a marker in the history of someone who whether for that single moment or for a lifetime has committed to the pursuit of the extraordinary. So, that first step into the arena, the first bloom of a voice claimed through the means of art, is as important as any other, a picture of not just what is, but what could be.
Dontai Amire's debut body of work No Love Here, is a raw collision of jigging beats, mellow bars, and spitfire poetry. Consisting of braggadocios bangers (SHIT AINT SWEET; ISSA GO), vibey lyrical jaunts (NO LOVE HERE), and introspective monologues (PRISON), the six-track EP sees the budding lyricist bare his teeth as he showcases the potential versatility in his musical toolkit.
From day to day, and even moment to moment, we all experience varying instances of personal struggle, from mental health to mood swings and the many other complexities in between. As the self-proclaimed “Sadboi” exemplifies over the fifteen-minute effort, it can be that very mix of everchanging and multifaceted sensibilities that often provide the true essence of artistry. Gliding with ease from cocky exclamations, such as on track SHIT AINT SWEET, [“I’m an independent, don’t do people, f**k the paparazzi”] and vibey yet-meditative choruses, such as in NO TOMORROW where [Amire] raps “might be no tomorrow, I got many demons that’s stuck in inside the Fronto--my heart is feeling hollow “
The young rapper’s willingness to shed his vulnerability and personal struggles betray an artist unafraid to wield the moment and step into his power. I can only wonder, in this arena of voices and vision, what Dontai Amire will come to achieve; but if his first at-bat is any indication, one would expect his voice to only get louder.
